Forward Slash

After hearing it on the Boagworld Podcast and in commercials on Virgin Radio Groove I wonder:

Why do the British say ‘forward slash’ when reading a web address?

In my understanding there is only one slash on the web. It is this one: ‘/’. So in a web URL there is no need to specify the slash as a forward slash.

The backslash exists on Windows PCs. Even as a Windows user I hardly ever have to decide whether to type a forward slash or a backslash.

So why ‘forward slash’? Keep it simple — call it ’slash’.
